Greek cruising comes to its senses

Greece is known by many as the birthplace of Mediterranean cruising and today the Piraeus-originating cruise business is a shadow of what it could have been. This is due to the antiquated laws excluding which required that all cruise ships operating from Greece be of Greek registry.

However  all is about to change as the Greek parliament finally removed this inhibiting restriction.

Queen to name Cunard’s new ship

The naming ceremony for Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth will occur on 11th October 2010 at Southampton by her majesty.

Peter Shanks, president and managing director of Cunard said

The naming of a Cunard Queen is a very special occasion and this will be an historic event in the true sense of the word. We are both honoured and proud that Her Majesty will name our new liner.

Portland Harbour is thriving

Oceania go British

Oceania cruises will introduce prices in pounds sterling in their next brochure due out in September this year, for  bookings from the start of 2011. The benefits to the UK customer are that the prices will be be more static and not depend on fluctuating conversion rates from their dollar original.

Pubs on cruise ships

There seems to be a growing trend amongst the large cruise companies to provide pubs. Carnival is following NCL & Cunard in adding a pub to one of it’s ships. The RedFrog Pub onboard Carnival Magic will serve a number of tasty Caribbean beers.

There will alsob be men’s designer clothing by Hackett of London and hand-woven Scottish woollen products from Harris Tweed.

Royal Caribbean boosts income from the Middle East

Royal Caribbean has revealed a 63% increase in bookings from the Middle East for the first half of 2010 compared with last year. Most popular destinations for Middle East travellers were  Mediterranean and Caribbean with cruises of 9 nights.
